Eco-efficiency for the Queensland Food Processing and Other Industries

About the Project

Eco-efficiency manuals have previously been developed for the Queensland Food Processing, Metal Finishing, Foundry and other Industries, however changes in the industries and the increased focus on environmental issues, particularly water, have led to the need to reinvestigate eco-efficiency opportunities for these industries.  The objective of this project is to provide these Queensland industries with the latest innovations in water, energy, resource conservation and waste reduction.  For more information on Eco-efficiency go to this link.

The project is being undertaken by the UNEP Working Group for Cleaner Production in the Food Industry through UniQuest - based at The University of Queensland.

The project is supported by the Queensland Government and the Australian Water Association.

Project Aim

The project is an extension of the EcoBiz project with the focus on  food processing and other industries.  The objective of the project is to provide the industries with access to the latest eco-efficiency information providing both economic and environmental benefits to companies.  Uptake of these initiatives will help to increase the profitability and competitiveness of these three Queensland industries.

Site visits of Queensland companies implementing eco-efficient projects will be undertaken and case studies will be developed to highlight the economic and environmental benefits stemming from these innovations.

Project Outcomes

Toolkits will be developed for these industries which provide information that can be easily implemented relevant to all size companies.   Fact sheets will be a large component of the toolkit with each one focussing on an area of particular interest within the industry showing how economic and environmental benefits can be achieved.

A self assessment guide will also be included, specific to the industry, to assist companies in determining the benefits of implementing ideas.

To ensure the information provided in the toolkit is relevant to the industry, two Reference Groups have been established: one for the Food Processing Industry and one for the other Industries.  These Reference Groups comprised of local and state government representatives, industry body representatives and industry champions allowing the most important environmental issues to be discussed and addressed and ensuring the project outcomes are relevant to the industry.

The toolkits will be available in the 2008/2009 financial year and a series of workshops will be provided to any company interested in implementing the ideas outlined in the toolkits.  Audits are available on a fee for service basis undertaken by UniQuest.
